Gum Disease Treatment in Elk Grove, CA

Meadowbrook Family Dental offers the latest gum disease treatments to keep your mouth healthy. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial gum infection caused by ongoing plaque buildup. It leads to red, swollen, and bleeding gums and, if untreated, can cause gum recession, tooth loss, and bone damage. Early discovery and treatment are key to protecting long-term oral health.

If you’re noticing gum disease symptoms, please let us know so we can treat them as early as possible.

01.

Treating Gum Disease

First, your gums and teeth are examined to determine the severity of your gum disease. This may include X-rays to evaluate bone loss and measure the depth of your gum pockets.

If scaling and root planing (also known as deep cleaning) are recommended, this removes plaque and tartar from teeth and below the gum line. Root planing smooths root surfaces, allowing the gums to reattach to the teeth. Along with scaling and root planing, antibacterial or antimicrobial treatments may be recommended to eliminate bacteria and kickstart healing.

For a high level of comfort, local anesthesia or oral sedation can be administered.

02.

Following Your Gum Disease Treatment

When your treatment is done, you should continue routine oral hygiene to maintain the health of your gums. This includes brushing and flossing at least twice a day, rinsing with mouthwash, and keeping up on regular dental checkups.

If gum disease symptoms return, please contact us and schedule an appointment.

FAQ

  • What does gum disease look like?

Gum disease can present with different symptoms depending on the stage:

    • Red, swollen, or tender gums
    • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing
    • Receding gums (teeth appear longer)
    • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
    • Pus between gums and teeth
    • Loose or shifting teeth
    • Changes in bite or how dentures fit
  • How long does gum disease take to develop?

Gum disease can develop in a few days if plaque isn’t removed. Gingivitis can progress to early periodontitis with gum recession and inflammation if left untreated over weeks or months. If left for months or years, advanced periodontitis can occur and lead to bone loss and tooth loss.

  • Can gum disease be reversed?

Gum disease can be reversed, but only in its early stage, known as gingivitis. Once it moves to periodontitis, it cannot be fully reversed, but it can be managed to prevent further damage.
