Tooth Extractions in Elk Grove, CA

A tooth extraction may be the only option when a tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or infected beyond repair. It may also be necessary for impacted wisdom teeth, overcrowding, or advanced gum disease. Although a last resort, removing a severely damaged tooth helps relieve pain, prevent complications, and support long-term oral health and treatment planning.

Our team does everything possible to preserve your natural teeth, but if extraction is required, we will make the process simple and comfortable.

01.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Examination and X-rays: We will examine the tooth’s condition and surrounding structures.

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia numbs the area to ensure comfort. Sedation may be used for complex cases or anxious patients.

Loosening the Tooth: Your dentist uses special tools to gently loosen the tooth from its socket for a simple extraction.

Tooth Removal: Once loose, the tooth is carefully removed with forceps.

Surgical Extraction (if needed): For impacted or broken teeth, a small incision may be made, and the tooth may be sectioned for easier removal.

02.

What Are the Next Steps?

Closing and Aftercare: The socket is cleaned, and gauze is placed to control bleeding. Stitches may be used if necessary.

Recovery Instructions: You’ll receive aftercare tips to aid healing, including rest, avoiding certain foods, and managing discomfort with medication.

Most extractions are quick, safe, and result in minimal discomfort with proper care.

FAQ

  • How do I know if my tooth needs extracted?

You may need a tooth extraction if you experience:

    • Severe tooth pain that doesn’t improve with treatment
    • Extensive decay or damage that can’t be restored
    • Advanced gum disease-causing, loose teeth
    • A tooth infection or abscess that can’t be resolved with a root canal
    • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain, swelling, or crowding
    • Overcrowded teeth requiring removal for orthodontic treatment

Your dentist will evaluate your tooth with an exam and X-rays to determine if extraction is the best option.

  • What is the recovery process from tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction recovery can often take a few days to a week, depending on the complexity of the extraction and your overall health.

  • How many teeth can be extracted at once?

You can have multiple teeth extracted at once, depending on your oral health, the reason for removal, and your dentist’s recommendation. Several or even all teeth (for complete dentures) can be removed in a single appointment.
